International nurses day is celebrated around the world on May 12th of every year.  This year the theme is on ‘Nurses: A Voice to lead, Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals’.

The Sustainable development Goals set by ICN are: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Improved Nutrition, Good Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities & Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production Climate Action, Life below Water, Life on the Land, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, Partnership for the Goals.

In order to create a healthier world we need to inspire and encourage ourselves.  Nurses are growing in their profession.  Nurses are the leaders; their voices are forceful and capable of making changes in the field of nursing to achieve the sustainable developments in health.

Each and every nurse can make an impact in our personal and professional life.  At all levels nurses have a pivotal role to play in achieving the sustainable development goals.

There are three ways a nurse can be a voice to lead and create a healthier world.

  1. As an individual, nurse need to speak to the individuals, families and communities.
  2. As a professional, by being  a member of an organization like TNAI, CNG, etc.,
  3. As a part of the Multi disciplinary team, the health professionals must work closely together with other disciplines to make long lasting changes.

The most important role of the nurse is to work with individuals who require services, empower them, and enable their participation to achieve the goal through the family and the community.
